Use Of Drugs In Pakistan Is On The Sharp Increase, Lt. Gen (R) Abdul Qayyum


CHAKWAL: Use of drugs in Pakistan is on the sharp increase adding approximately 40000 fresh cases per year to existing total of approximately 6.7 million . 

Main targets are unfortunately the youth specially college and university students both boys (78 percent ) and girls (22 percent) said Senator Abdul Qayyum while presenting a report in the Senate standing committee on Norcotics .

 The General said 75 percent of total world production of opium is added by Afghanistan which illegally exports approximately 110 Tonnes of opium to the entire world . Approximately 40 to 50 tonnes of opium is utilized with in Pakistan.

In 2005 only 11 percent of injection drug users had indicated HIV positive . In 2011 this percentage jumped to 40 percent.

 Senator Qayyum also gave reasons for excessive use of drugs as economic deprivation , unemployment , loose educational institution’s control , under strength ANTF with inadequate funds , weak legislation , mild punishments and a visible  general decay of ethics and morals in our prevalent social milieu
